Discover Enjoyable and Learning Activities for Kids with Autism

Does your young one have Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? If you are nodding your head, then you already know that he or she has special needs, right? One of the difficulties of bringing up a kid with autism is finding the right activity that he or she can find both educational and fun. The reason for this is that your child has special needs and not all forms of entertainment may be good for him or her. Still, you should not worry too much about this, as you can do plenty of things with him or her such as the following:

    1. Mimic sounds – imitating the noises around your home (maybe from animals, insects, or vehicles passing by) can be very enjoyable. What is more, it can be a learning experience too, as he or she discovers the calls of the wild.
    2. Sing – your child cannot resist this one activity, especially if you play his or her favourite tracks. However, if he or she is non-verbal, then avoid possible frustration by taking the lead. Instead of singing the words aloud, you can hum them. Then, you can ask your little one to follow. Alternatively, you can play simple musical instruments such as tambourines, whistles, xylophones, drums, or kazoos. You can teach him or her to create basic tunes. On the other hand, you can simply let your kid enjoy making his or her own music.
    3. Build castles – well, you can make more than palaces with your young one; you can also put together buildings or anything that he or she prefers. The main ideas of this activity are to bring out his or her creativity and to help construct a calm atmosphere or routine.
    4. Play games – you can enjoy plenty of healthy competitions with your child. It may be either educational (e.g. board games) or purely recreational (e.g. tag, follow the leader, and shooting water sprays). If the match involves winning, ensure that you reiterate the point that the concept of winner or loser is not important and that the main goal of any game is learning.
    5. Engage in sports – like any other children their age, your kid also likes to participate in athletic activities; therefore, find out what he or she likes. You will know by bringing him or her to the store. Whatever merchandise he or she picks up, it will indicate his or her interest.
    6. Explore – you may not know it but it is also fun to discover new ideas with your child. For instance, you can get free daily horoscopes online or through the phone. You can just imagine the excitement on your little one’s face as he or she reads or listens to what the astrologist has to say.

These are just a few things you can perform with your young one. Apart from these, you can come across more activities; all you have to do is find out what is most interesting for him or her.
