Feeding a Kid with Autism May Require Special Attention

Dealing with autism in children is not a difficult matter if you take time to discover their special needs and the things you can do to make them feel comfortable and loved. So, if your young one is going through the same condition, you should not feel anxious. What you can do is broaden your point of view, so you are aware of the proper means of dealing with him or her.

One of the issues that you may have to face if your kid has Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is his or her diet. As a parent, you have to be aware that other aspects may affect his or her eating pattern. These factors usually include the following:

  • Physical – typically involves difficulties with swallowing or chewing due to related disorders
  • Routine – if your little one is heavily dependent on his or her habits, the smallest changes (e.g. using another plate or utensil and not sitting in the same chair) can be upsetting
  • Anxiety – there may also be worries about social interaction, especially if you have guests over at mealtime
  • Sensory – generally refers to sensitivity to texture, smell, or taste

Since your child requires extra attention, it is best to have a food diary handy, so you can keep track of the food he or she likes to eat. You can also write down his or her attitude at the dinner table or reaction towards certain events. Additionally, you can gradually introduce new dishes. Finally, never fail to consult with a paediatrician for professional advice.
